Riding Instructor
January 2008
Job Title: Riding Instructor
Reports to: Executive Director
HOPE is seeking NARHA-certified instructors and prospective instructors for a part-time position, a maximum of approximately 20 hours per month, $15.00/hour. We are currently building our rider base and our goal is to add five new lessons to our weekly schedule this Spring. If you aren't certified, but have riding experience, please let us know if you're interested in learning how to become an instructor.
To be certified, you must be at least 18 years old, and you're required to be an instructor-in-training for 25 hours minimum (non-paid hours) at our facility. HOPE will help pay for the certification weekend if you commit to being an instructor for one year, instructing a minimum number of sessions per semester. The NARHA Web site provides complete information about the certification process - www.narha.org.
We ask that those interested visit HOPE to observe sessions in progress. You will be able to meet the current instructors, riders, families and volunteers who dedicate their time to the program. Feel free to ask questions and attend sessions as many time as you’d like.
If after observing the sessions, you remain interested in becoming an instructor, we ask that you volunteer for 25 hours, and take a basic horsemanship and riding test using one of our horses. Once you've completed 25 volunteer hours and have taken the tests, we'll assess whether to advance you to an instructor in training. As an instructor in training, you'll be responsible for deciding on session activities and directing sessions.
After completing your instructor in training hours and the NARHA certification weekend, HOPE will assist you in finding riders and setting a session schedule.
Throughout the process and beyond, everyone at HOPE works as a team to support each instructor in learning and building your role at the program.
Again, the process for becoming an instructor at HOPE requires the following:
- 25 hour of volunteer time
- 25 hour of instructor-in-training volunteer time (if HOPE decides you are ready to conduct lessons)
- a NARHA certification course
